Today,Mr Chua gave us a worksheet,
which is marked according to how we answered it.
The first worksheet is on a scene in The Merchant of Venice.
Where by Portia tries to plead Shylock to have some mercy on Antonio.
Then Shylock says that he is keeping his words to his bond.
Which means..he'll show no mercy.
Half of the class get to read Shylock's lines,
while the other half reads Portia's lines.
Then after ,we'll have to do th worksheet,
time limit:10 minutes. o,o
Then "handed in the worksheet"
(just passed in front)
Then Mr Chua used the bottle thingy
and Hidayah was called.
He asked her to repeat what she wrote "using memory."
Question was "Do you think that Shylock is right to demand to murder Antonio?Explain."
Hidayah said "yes" and then I was like "no"....
She said that Shylock has the bond which holds the punishment for Antonio.
And my answer was going to be :
"No,Shylock doesn't have the right to MURDER Antonio, but to only cut a pound of flesh off of Antonio's chest."
And then the bottle thing again, and my name was called out.
Had to answer that question too.
-,-
What I had actually "said" was
No,because Shylock had no right to Murder Antonio.
Then Mr Chua asked Desmond to repeat what I've said.
And he was like,:"cannot hear."
Then blablabla~
Had to repeat it over five times. (i counted)
(ranting)
-,-
My answer was for the entire story though
way until the part when Portia said that only a pound of flesh
nothing else can be cut off or else Shylock would lose all his money.
I guess that's wen Shylock loses it.
Actually since we only have the summary and the scenes of a single part of a play,
all we could assume was that Shylock was the main villain.
So after that, Mr chua gave us another piece of worksheet
which is an earlier part of the scene where by we found out why Shylock holds so much hatred towards Antonio.
So that scene had actually been the part where Antonio goes for Shylock
to borrow money for Bassanio.
Those three paragraphs had me thinking:
Antonio=racist =bad->results in Shylock hating Antonio.
But Antonio doing this for friend=good guy
But he is racist=bad guy
So over all
Antonio=1/4 bad guy
Shylock (to me) =Still bad guy -,-
Then again I could actually link the racist stuff to the news today.
The one about Pastor Rony Tan and how he "accidentally" insulted the beliefs of other religions.
Still, in Antonio's lines, it showed that even with Shylock planning up a cruel punishment, Antonio is still persistent to lend money from Shylock to help Bassanio.
Homework: do the worksheet. D;
